Here again a page from my Australia-Scrapbook, with a really nice (true) history. I know she is a bit long, but if you have the time, just read on. I rarely print long stories in my album pages, but this was a must! And now: Enjoy a story about Crocodile Dundee, kangaroos, outback roads and a firework at the end of the world! Dies ist der Text auf der rechten Album-Seite:Das Highlight unseres Inselausflugs war jedoch eine Reise "ans Ende der Welt": So zumindest fühlte es sich an, als wir eine 30 km lange Schotterstraße mit ca. 25 km/h entlangschlichen, weil die Strasse Wellen wie das Cuxhavener Wattenmeer aufwies.
Auf dem Weg sprangen Kängurus über die Strasse und wir sahen Enchidnas (sprich: Enkidnahs), kleine Stachelschweine, noch süßer als unsere deutschen Igel, am Strassenrand. Wenn sie langsam über die Strasse "wackelten" (und ihr kleiner dicker Hintern sich von rechts nach links und zurück bewegte) ließen sie sich von Autos nicht stören. Die Strasse wirkte bis auf die Bäume am Strassenrand wie mitten im Outback - rot und staubig!Nach einer Stunde waren wir am Ziel, bei einem Leuchtturm am Ende der Insel. Direkt an einem steilen Kliff belegen. Ausser dem Leuchtturmwärter Mick, der irgendwie wie eine Mischung aus Crocodile Dundee und dem Krokodil-Bändiger Steve Irwin wirkte, und uns beiden, war dort niemand. Wir waren dort in einem alten Leuchtturmwärterhaus untergebracht, in dem wir 8 (!) Zimmer für uns allein hatten. Wir begegneten Mick zum ersten Mal, als wir Kängurus in seinem Garten beobachteten, die er mit Essensresten füttert.
Mick ist der letzte Leuchtturmwärter im Dienste des Bundestaates South Australia. Auf die schlechte Straße angesprochen sagte er: "Sometimes the worst roads lead to the best places!" (Manchmal führen die schlechtesten Strasßn zu den besten Orten.) und er sollte recht behalten. Er versprach uns eine Spezial-Tour durch den Leuchtturm, bei Dunkelheit, wenn das Signal an ist. Er erklärte mit Stolz, dass sein Leuchtturm der letzte mit der althergebrachten Signalbeleuchtung ist. Alle anderen Leuchttürme haben nur noch eine 26 Watt Birne.
Er zeigte uns (so wie ein Zirkusdirektor seinen besten Löwen präsentiert) eine riesige Glühbirne von 1000 Watt (taataaa...), diese sendet 4 mal kurz nacheinander Signale aus auf die See und pausiert dann für 8 Sekunden. Es ist ein Irrglaube, dass Leuchttürme immer in gleichen Abständen leuchten und ausgehen, jeder hat sein eigenes Signal an einer bestimmten Küstengegend, damit die Seeleute genau wissen, welcher Leuchtturm Signale gibt. Nach der Führung fragte Mick, ob wir gerne die Kanone abfeuern möchten... :-)
Das war keine unmoralisches Angebot, sondern tatsächlich so gemeint. Täglich um 12.30 Uhr wird am Leuchtturm eine alte Kanone abgefeuert (allerdings aus Sicherheitgründen nicht mit Pulver und Kugeln, sondern mit Feuerwerk). Wir bekamen nachts eine Sondervorstellung und dürften den roten Auslöseknopf drücken. Es kam ein lauter Knall und ein kleiner Feuerwerksstreif zog durch die Luft mitten im Nirgendwo.
Wir konnten unser Glück über diese besondere Tour und die Tiere, die wir gesehen haben kaum fassen. In der Nacht zogen die Ausläufer eines Zyklons, der an der Westküste bei Perth gewütet hatte über die Insel. Der Regen prasselte, der Wind pfiff und wir lagen im warmen Bett am Ende der Welt...

The highlight of our island excursion was a journey "to the end of the World": At least it felt that way as we "crept" along a 30 km long gravel road with about 25 km per hour because of all the bumps on the road. On the way kangaroos jumped across the road and we saw Enchidnas, small porcupines, even sweeter than a hedgehog, on the roadside. If they slowly walk across the road (and their quite large bum moving from right to left and back) they were not disturbed by cars. The road except for the trees on the side looked like we were in the middle of the outback - red and dusty!
After an hour we reached our destination: a beautiful lighthouse at the far end of Kangaroo Island. Only a few meters next to a steep cliff. Besides the lighthouse keeper Mick, who seemed like a nice mixture of Crocodile Dundee and Steve Irwin the crocodile tamer, and the two of us, no one was there. We were housed in the old lighthouse keeper's house, where we had 8 (!) Room to ourselves. We met Mick for the first time when we watched kangaroos in his garden, which he fed with leftover food.
Mick is the last lighthouse keeper in the service of the State of South Australia. Asked about the bad road, he said: "Sometimes the worst roads lead to the best places!" And he was right. He promised us a special tour of the lighthouse at night, when the signal is on. With pride he explained that this is the last lighthouse with the traditional signal lights. All other lighthouses only have a 26 watt bulb.
He showed us a huge light bulb with 1000 watts (taataaa... - like a ringmaster presents his favourite Lion in a Circus), this bulb is sending light-signals to the sea 4 times in rapid succession and then pauses for 8 seconds. There is a misconception (from all the Movies) that lighthouses always shine and go out at equal intervals, each has its own signal at a specific coastal area, so the sailors know exactly which one of the lighthouses sends these signals. After the tour, Mick asked if we would like to fire the cannon... ;-)
This wasn't indecent proposal, but actually meant this way. Every day at 12.30 an old cannon at the lighthouse is fired (although for security reasons, not with powder and bullets, but with fireworks). So we had our own special fireworks at night, equipped with sound protective head-phones pushing the red release button. There was a loud bang and a small fireworks streak moved through the dark sky in the middle of nowhere.
During the night a cyclone reached the West Coast near Perth and a heavy storm reached the island. While we lay in our warm beds remembering this incredible day, the only sound around was the heavy rain on the rooftop and the whistling of the wind at the end of the world ...
